    McMaster Review

    November 2008:  The McMaster Review, to assess excellence and innovation in the arts, was commissioned by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.  Although film was not included in the remit of the Review, the UK Film Council has made a submission, arguing for the inclusion of film as an important art form and setting out the extent to which the promotion of excellence and innovation are central to the remit of the UK Film Council and affect every part of its work, from talent and skills development to production, distribution and exhibition.

    Why Does Convergence Matter?

    January 2008:  The UK Film Council made a submission to the first seminar convened by the Convergence Think Tank created by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR).  The subject of the seminar was Why Does Convergence Matter?  The UK Film Council argued that convergence matters because it presents significant opportunities for citizens, consumers and for the UK economy.

    Competition and Innovation: Content and Services

    February 2008

    The UK Film Council made a submission to the second seminar convened by the Convergence Think Tank. The subject of the seminar was  Competition and Innovation: Content and Services.  The UK Film Council identified the key challenges for content creators as being the availability of Next Generation Access (NGA) broadband and the potentially lower returns available from digital media as opposed to traditional packaged media such as DVD.

    DCMS: Implementing the EU Audiovisual Media Services Directive

    October 2008

    The UK Film Council responded to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport consultation on the implementation of the European Union's Audiovisual Media Services (AVMS). The submission drew attention to the need to consider citizen as well as consumer interests, to take account of the proposals in the AVMS Directive regarding media literacy and argued that product placement in films shown on UK television should be allowed to continue.

    DCMS: Product Placement on Television

    January 2010:  The UK Film Council made a submission to the DCMS consultation on product placement on television, underlining its support for the re-stated position of the Government that the rules permitting product placement in films shown on television would remain unaltered.
