Cultural Impact Seminars
Beyond the box office
Presentations of the Stories we tell ourselves study took place in each of the nations and were used as a platform to demonstrate that film is central to people's everyday lives and plays an important role in our national culture.
Other key themes to emerge during these discussions were:
- Increasing access to and encouraging debate on film heritage is central to a vibrant film culture;
- The digital age is providing audiences with new ways to access and interact with film.
Professor Ian Christie (Birkbeck) and Bertrand Moullier (NARVAL) led each of the seminars joined by local commentators.

Belfast - June 2010
In conjunction with our partner Northern Ireland Screen, local commentators Mike Catto and Brian Henry Martin (Doubleband Films and Belfast Film Festival) were joined by the UK Film Council's David Steele and John Newbigin on the stage. Films depicting The Troubles like The Crying Game and In the Name of the Father, which drew international attention to Northern Ireland and its blossoming film industry were two of many case studies discussed.

Edinburgh - June 2010
In conjunction with our partner Scottish Screen (now Creative Scotland), broadcaster Mark Cousins, producer Gillian Berrie (Sigma Films) and Jonathan Murray (Edinburgh College of Art) joined the panel. The seminar took place to a full house during Edinburgh International Film Festival where Trainspotting and Movern Callar were two of the numerous case studies discussed.

York – January 2011
By invitation from Screen Yorkshire and York University, Andy Harries (Leftbank pictures) and Estelle Morris (Former Secretary of State for Education and Skills and Minister for the Arts) and Andrew Higson (University of York) joined Professor Ian Christie (Birkbeck College) and Bertrand Moullier (NARVAL) to discuss the cultural impact of UK cinema. Brassed off, The Damned United and Love on the Dole were a few of case studies examined.

Bristol - February 2011
By invitation from Watershed, the UK Film Council (now BFI) took Beyond the Box Office to Bristol. Rebecca O'Brien (Sixteen Films), Alison Sterling (South West-based producer, Ignition Films) and Caroline Norbury (South West Screen) joined Professor Ian Christie (Birkbeck College) and Bertrand Moullier (NARVAL) to discuss the cultural impact of UK cinema. Mark Cosgrove (Head of Programming at Watershed) moderated the discussion where Tamara Drewe, Straw Dogs and Radio On were a few of the case studies examined.

Dublin - June 2011
By invitation from the Irish Film Board, Director Lenny Abrahamson, Pippa Cross (CrossDay Productions), John Kelleher (Irish Film Classification Office) and James Hickey, CEO of the Irish Film Board joined Professor Ian Christie (Birkbeck College) and Bertrand Moullier (NARVAL Media) to discuss the cultural impact of Irish cinema. The Field, The Wind that Shakes the Barley and My Left Foot were some of the case studies discussed.
